Only just started reading it, but I wanted to post a warning for anybody on the Kindle. The concept is that the story is told through emails and text conversations, and for some bizarre stylistic each page is basically an image. This creates all this extra marginal so the text is insanely tiny, and you can’t increase the font size b/c IT’S IN IMAGE. You just had to try to zoom in on the image but that doesn’t help much b/c then you can’t fit an entire line on the screen. Whoever made this decision at the publishing house is bonkers! 85% of the content is emails, which don’t even need a special visual presentation to help you get what’s going on or immerse yourself or whatever. This could be a fun read but I don’t know if I’ll be able to finish it :(
So, I will say first that this book has some merits. It is well written, each character has a unique voice, and it starts out quite funny. Eventually though, you realize that the story is not about a group of friends who have occasional stress-induced squabbles, but a group of toxic, petty woman-children who constantly vie for attention and short-term gratification at the expense of everyone else in the group. I understand these characters are meant to be satirical, but presenting these characters as friends is so far from truth that the exchanges go from funny to sad (and kind of terrifying) real fast. I went into this book expecting to love it, but now I want my time and my money back. Hopefully it's not too late for you. If you do choose to read it, be prepared to call any and all of your actual, non-toxic friends after you've finished, and say a few words of appreciation.
Hysterical and so full of life! Caroline and Michelle have done something here that not many author/collaborators can do—they’ve nailed the characters in their unique voices, in their styleand personalities,and in drawing the plot line through and around them! This, in essence, may be designed to capture the 20 and 30ish reader, but in truth, it’s appeal is much wider than that! It’s the story of any or all of us who are connected to our girlfriends and how, despite ourselves, we can screw up everything around us, but at the end of the day, we still have one another to live, laugh and play with now and always!
The characters were so hateable I almost didn't read past the first 10 pages. Sadly, it was the last book in my stack on vacation. I continued hating them throughout the book as each girl's "personality" became more and more predictable and trite. The best thing I can say about this is that it's like being BCC'd on an email thread of people you hate, where there's a hint of juicy gossip that never fully comes to fruition and instead just makes you sad. Is it worth it? No. Do yourself a favor and read something worthwhile with an actual plot that you won't feel relieved you've finished.
Although the format is chosen wisely as it represents well how today's BFFs communicate, the contents were quite disappointing. It's a hilarious read for sure, but the superficial and shallow relationships between the friends overshadow the nature of friendship.I was excited to read this book and preordered it after reading an excerpt from it in one of the magazine's. It was hilariously funny and addictive - I couldn't wait to read more. When I read the book however, I missed the character growth and cinserety of the relationship.
While the format was creative and fresh, I couldn't get through this book. And comparing this book to "Bridget Jones Diary" is an insult to Helen Fielding. This was such a missed opportunity. So many women can empathize with wedding overload, ridiculous life struggles and trying to make something of your life in a competitive world. Instead of portraying this very real, raw and hilarious struggle - it just flounders around with a bunch of annoying, self obsessed and shallow women...so very unreal and lame. Insert all the eye rolls here.
This book was entertaining, but it was different from what I had hoped for, and I think it could have been so much better. Having been a bride myself in the past few years, and a bridesmaid in several weddings, I was tickled to read a book poking fun at some of the tropes around that experience. However, the characters in this book were complete caricatures. Some of the story lines rang true, but the complete shallowness and self-absorption of nearly every person made the story just a little too silly. I was entertained, but would have liked something a little more real or true-to-life. Fine for a few hours to kill. Definitely recommend going with the hard copy.
Every time I read a espitolary style book I always think about how fun it is and how I wish there were more novels written in this style. I think part of the appeal for me is that I feel like I’m getting a secret look at a side of people’s normally private life. This is told solely via emails and texts and even though I know these are fictional characters I still love the intimacy this structure creates, it feels voyeuristic in a super fun way and I always end up binge reading these books in one sitting.I want to make it clear that this isn’t a book to be taken seriously at all, the characters are over the top outrageous and their antics and behaviors make them seem almost caricature like. There is no depth here, it’s silly and hilarious and totally bonkers in the best possible way. These women are the type you love to hate, you wanna smack them upside the head often but you also cannot stop reading, I honestly enjoyed it SO much and if you like espitolary novels you have got to give this a shot, seriously laugh out loud funny!Hey Ladies! in three words: Silly, Outlandish and Wild.
