Her change of perspective at the end feels a bit contrived but does create a satisfying end. Jules's two moms add a layer of diversity, but many readers will find this Los Angeles prep school drama difficult to relate to. I do love a good YA book every now and then but this book was just okay to me...more like meh. I thought the title was cute and interesting, so I automatically thought I'd like it; however, that was not the case. Now I'm not saying I hated the book but I also didn't love it either. After the first couple of chapter the main character, Jules, gets super annoying. I get it she's a Type A all honors stupid--yippee? But the book is basically two groups fighting the entire time.. kind of reminded me of Shut Out by Kody Keplinger...but that was more like boys vs. girls (sports-wise) and in my opinion a better book. Maybe it's cause I didn't have enough sleep or coffee today but I will definitely give this book another chance and hopefully my review will change in a more positive note.
This book is for everyone who loved the Gilmore Girls, but wanted a version of it telling Paris's story, or for everyone who loved Leslie Knope of Parks and Rec, but wanted to see her as a senior in high school. This book is about overachieving, all of the great and terrible things about being a teenage girl, boybands, and how much everything seems so important at that age in life, and it manages to be both fun and funny while doing all of this. The perfect summer read, no matter how old you are.
I love all Amy's books because they're about real, smart girls with real, smart problems. Jules is a funny and relatable heroine, and her type-A anxiety made me giggle because I recognize it in myself. Plus there's a cute guy with great hair, as there is in all Amy Spalding books. A fun read with real laughs and real life.
Occasionally characters come around in books and I feel like I have found myself. Jules is one of those characters. She has high anxiety, she has this need to be perfect and accepted. Natalie has few wants in life. She wants to be editor in chief of her school newspaper, wants to get into Brown, and wants to feel like her parents (Mom and Darcy) found her worth it.Jules’ dreams start to come true with her getting editor in chief and everything else around her starts to crumble. There is a rival newspaper/TV show. There is a cute boy. And Jules is slowly becoming a s***ty friend (even though she’s currently not aware).Here’s the thing. I know that spiral that Jules was in. I know it well. It’s also why when people comment that Jules isn’t realistic, or she worries about silly things I’m going to be bothered. Because there was a bit of me in Jules. I’m super protective of her because teenage Ashley needed Jules.What I also loved about The New Guy and Spalding books in general, are the friendships, particularly female friendships that are evident throughout not only The New Guy but previous novels also. They’re real friends and they work through their s***. One can never say that Spalding writes one dimensional friendships.Sometimes books are hard to review, and it is of no fault of the book. It’s totally on me and I’m not sure how to put into words how much I adored this book. Spalding is easily one of my favorite contemporary writers. From her main characters to how she writes parents, I adore her stories, The New Guy (and Other Senior Year Distractions) cannot be missed.
Super cute, super fun, super book!!!
This was just a fast, fun read. Amy has a way of giving her characters relatabillity. You can empathize with the drama they go through. The drama is a fun roller coaster you want to be on.
This book is delightful. One of the things I liked best about it was that Jules has a lot of anxiety and is kind of uptight, which is actually very common in high-achieving girls, but NOT common in YA books at all. I found her very easy to relate to because of it, and found her to be a refreshing protagonist. She's kind of like a nicer Tracy Flick? I also liked Jules's parents. I've read a few of Spalding's other books, and I think she's very good at writing adults, which is also a nice change of pace. I'd highly recommend this book to teens looking for a light, contemporary read.
