This book belongs in a war college classroom. The minute detail of every platoon, company, battalion division etc. And the names and ranks of the officers and enlisted personnel. And the hills and plateaus. And the complicated and sometimes alternating battle plans. Detail after detail, page after page. I began to wonder when the story line was going to appear. Then it dawned on me that this was it! I was not prepared for a course in military strategy, and for the revelations of writings by people from both sides of the conflict. This book reminds me of a person I knew in Thunder Bay, Michigan. A civil war buff. He would have spent hours plotting out the positions on the very detailed maps in this book. He would, I am certain, have rated this book 5 stars. Three is all I can squeeze out of it.
This is an interesting if somewhat turgid account of the battle for Saipan in June and July of 1944, written in 1950 by a Marine Corps Officer who was also an official historian. The book is a matter-of-fact account of the battle. It treats rather lightly and summarily the very poor relationship between the Marines and the Army, which boiled over when the overall commander, the profane Marine general Howling Mad Smith, fired the Army general. The claim was that the Army’s 27th Infantry Division moved too slowly. The controversy spilled over into the American press. Morale in the 27th Division was adversely affected, and it is said never recovered during the war.The details of this controversy do not appear in this book. The author simply reports what happened on the battlefield. Unlike what would be written today, there is no editorializing and, in fact, no real description or analysis of the interservice rivalry that so roiled the battle (and carried over into the battle for Okinawa almost a year later and even after the war when President Truman tried to abolish the Marine Corps). This book is worth reading as a dispassionate description of a vicious battle. There is much more to the story, but for a straightforward account written only six years afterward, this book is very good.
I had previously read books by individual Marines about their experiences in the Pacific during WW II, and they are very moving accounts of the emotions and hardships of the daily life of a combat Marine. This book gives the daily viewpoint of the officers, especially senior officers, that were responsible for winning battles and taking control of Saipan. Although the book is very factual about the tactics etc, it does not overlook the casualties of both the US Marines and Army soldiers and the Japanese soldiers and civilians. For me, the combination of reading this book and the books by individual front line, combat Marines really helps me understand and appreciate the total effort, dedication and sacrifices that were required to win in the Pacific. My background includes serving during the "Cold War" as a Marine enlisted intelligence specialist and also as a Navy Supply officer on a fast attack submarine. I am thankful that I was never in a combat situation.
This book explained the high level actions that took place to take over Saipan Island during WWII. It discussed how the various units were placed and maneuvered, casualties during various actions in the battle and the difficulties units encountered. There was very little from the Marine or Army grunt point of view. If you like to read about a battle and how the various units were maneuvered and the top down look at the battle, then this book is for you. If you want a more low level account like from the front line troops point of view, you will be disappointed with this book.
Excellent "Overview/Battle Plan(s)", yet personal descriptions of the Grunts' world. They (USMC) ultimately succeeded - The Hard (but necessary) Way. And somewhat uniquely in writings of the Pacific War the enemy's Top Brass accounts in parallel timeline fill in the picture. But very disturbing is the performance of our Army divisions (excepting 'F Company') "supporting" the Marines - The top Brass that is, not the Grunts. They were like an anchor not weighed for the ship underway. This was probably the beginning of when Gen. Holland M. Smith began to be called "Howlin' Mad Smith".
This is an old semi-official history, part of a Marine history of WW II in the Pacific. It is therefore not based on documents available only to later historians and particularly not in much in the way of Japanese documents. In an interesting way this is an advantage—it gives the book a narrow but deep US perspective. It has a lot of detail with quotations from US personnel from admirals and generals to enlisted (and, to be fair, also some quotations from Japanese survivors). It tells in great detail the difficulties imposed on the US forces by the terrain. All in all this is an excellent account of the battle for Saipan.
Definitely for the avid military analyst. The thoroughness of military analysis becomes a bit tedious for a lay reader. While comprehensive and detailed the attention to minutiae required for the professional military reader is wasted on a casual reader.
I’d have given it 5 Stars, but the Navajo Code Talkers were completely omitted. Perhaps they did not play a vitally significant role, but they were unique and the USMC felt compelled to use them. Obviously the USMC had reasons for this type of Signal Security. But alas, every participating unit in this epic battle is mentioned - but for the Navajos. This is a well written book, and the research is meticulous, which leads me to conclude that the omission of the Navajo Code Talkers is intentional.
